Your
original driving license (if you have one in another province or
country ) is valid in Ontario only for the first two months (60
days).
Before
you start working it is good to pass the complete driving
examination for Ontario license.
There
are three examinations:
- vision
test;
- written
test (answers questions on a computer or write on paper);
- road
test.
You
have to apply for the license at the Driver
Examination Centres. In Toronto area this centres may be very
busy, so allow enough time when you apply. Bring with you two pieces
of identification. After you pay the fee you can take the vision and
written test. It is available in many languages (English, French,
Chinese, Croatian, Finnish, Greek, Hindu, Korean, Russian, Spanish
etc. not in Romanian). The fee gets changed from time to time, so
take with you enough money (about $100).
If you are a new resident of Ontario and have a valid driver's licence
from another province or country, you can use that licence for 60
days in Ontario. If you want to continue to drive after 60 days
, you must get an Ontario driver's licence.
If you have one, bring with you previous original
driving license (it is a good idea to have a translation for this).
This may help you to get the final driving license called class
"G class".
If
you pass the vision test and the written test you receive "G1
class" driving license - for beginners.
If you pass all three tests you will receive a "G2
class" (zero alcohol and remember to ensure that all passengers
wear a seat-belt !!!) or a "G class" (allow for some
alcohol approx. .079 or less, but better if you don't!) class
driving license (depends if you had or not another license) and a
Photo Card in a plastic cover.
Check
with the Ministry of Transportation for an update on latest
requirements and regulations.
The
written test is quite simple. You need a couple of hours to study
the
"Driver's Handbook" - that contains Ontario driving
rules and regulations. This booklet can be bought at any Driving
Examination Centre.
Most
of them are similar to those in Europe. There are exceptions in
speed limits, turning right on red after a full stop if the road is
clear, looking over your left or right hand shoulder when you change
lanes (this is a MUST, both for driving test and when you are a
licensed driver) etc. We as many others found the driving test quite
difficult. Most of our friends failed the driving test the first
time, mostly because of the habits that not apply here. So, be
careful!
Even
if you don't have a car, you should have a driver's license.
We wrote the first exam on the first week we arrived
here (before we bought our car). Don't panic and take it!.
Canada operates under a demerit point system for driving
offense. This can change your car insurance premiums. This points
may stay on your record for several years.
Check for updates on the demerit point system with
Ministry of Transportation.
You
can take this exams at any Ministry of Transportation - Driver
Examination Centers from Toronto and vicinity. Can be even cities
around Toronto as: Aurora, Brampton etc.
